If there’s one thing that pisses me off, it’s being used for something sinister (rotten even).

While monitoring the blogosphere, I saw this open letter from one of the Isulong SEOPH contest sponsors (now scratched from the list).

From: JNB Web Promotion Info
Reply-To: info@jnbwebpromotion.com
Date: Sep 26, 2006 8:55 PM
Subject: PLEASE POST

I have warned Marc Macalua (Mr. SEO) many times since the inception of the Isulong SEOPh contest that the way he was conducting the contest was not what we had agreed upon before I agreed to be a sponsor. I have tried daily, for I am in the SEO business daily, to contact Marc Macalua to express to him that I cannot employ BLOG Spammers N Jammers.

The way this contest has been conducted by Marc Macalua is and will be of of ABSOLUTELY NO USE TO EMPLOYERS. I can not give you guys a job because I do not have any customers for BLOG Spammers N Jammers, its just that simple.

Marc Macalua has refused to contact me back. I have tried YM, I have tried calling him, no response. Now recently all I got from him was a bank account # to which I replied to with an inquiry and I still have not received a response back on that.

One of the conditions of me agreeing to sponsor this contest was that the contest entry had to be a website, not a blog. I wanted to see professional content and I wanted to see SEO that could be explained by the winners so that the other contestants could learn from the winners. Since this contest began, until today, the only thing I see is BLOG Spamming and Jamming. 9 of the top 10 entries are Wordpress Blogs. When I first heard about this contest I was really happy because it could have boosted
SEO jobs and outsourcing to the Philippines. But friends honestly, who is willing to do business with BLOG Spammer N Jammers ? No one comes to an SEO and says here is $ 10,000 Dollars, I want you to Spam and Jam my BLOG.

If I were to have a client, which I never have that wanted their BLOG Spammed and Jammed then perhaps I could give one of you a Job. Have any of you ever been looking for a Job anywhere either in print or online and seen this ? Help Wanted: BLOG Spammer s N Jammers ? I have never, ever had a client come to me and request that their Blog be Spammed and Jammed.

I was hoping to hire about 10 people from this contest. I don’t now and never have had customers for what Marc Macalua has allowed to happen in this contest. And after being warned by me so many times ? Guys I am sorry, I will not be hiring from this contest. For me it is an expensive proposition to take on employees that need to be trained on how to properly optimize websites. Just imagine when you ask the winners why are you number 1, 2 or 3. Will they know why ? Could they teach it to another and then could the both of them support their Families doing it ? The answer to that is absolutely no because no one is willing to pay to have their BLOG Spammed and Jammed.

In a work team situation like we operate here in a professional way, we help each other and if you dont know the reasons why you rank then you would not be able to explain to your co-workers what you have done in order to rank high.

After so many years in the Philippines, I was hoping the Filipino’s would gain a big boost in the IT industry due to this contest, but reading so may Foreign Forums and messages such as from seobook.com that are derogatory and critical I feel ashamed because Filipino’s can do much better. Many of them are great and are even very professional. I love to work along side them, but the way this contest has been set up is for me out of order. This is why as of now, I am retracting my offer to sponsor and I will no longer be a sponsor to this spamming and jamming contest. It hurts me to say this, particularly because I’m in the SEO business for years and when I compare the low quality way that this contest has been conducted, it has been far from professional. I’m sure if this would have been set up with criteria that I set forth to Marc Macalua, the results would have been much better and I would have been able to offer many of you jobs. Did you know that 9 out of the top 10 entries are Wordpress Blogs. I have no customers for this I’m sorry. I guess its time to set up a forum done by real SEO experts along the level of a Webmasterworld or Digitalpoint here in the Philippines.

Perhaps we will place this as the first thread: Help Wanted: BLOG Spammers N Jammers ?

Regards,
John Bertrand

JNB Web Promotion (www.jnbwebpromotion.com - this comment’s mine)

I’ve told a lot of people that during these types of situations, the best thing to do is to step back and collect your thoughts. One should never fire back while emotionally charged. Allow me to break that rule just for today.

Hi Bertrand,

I think it’s a bit funny for you to back out from your promised P5,000 prize sponsorship ($100) after all the links and traffic that went your way. The least you can do is give the prize to whoever wins it and shut up.

To set the record straight, we never agreed on a “way to conduct the contest” as a prerequisite for you to sponsor. If I had known that were the case, believe me, I wouldn’t have wasted my time talking to you. I got bigger prize sponsorship offers with far less grandstanding requirements. Also, don’t pretend you contact me on a daily basis, because you don’t.

And before you get all high and mighty with the whitehat act, consider your past work on the Ambergris website, among others.

I’m pulling out your link, I suggest everyone who linked to him as a contest sponsor do the same.

Lastly, a blog IS a website.

Marc
www.macalua.com

Here’s the part I didn’t send to the SEO Philippines mailing list, as per group policy:

  1. For someone who projects himself as the owner of a very large, very professional company, your handling of the situation is very very crass.
  2. Even from a SEO point of view, pretending to be a contest sponsor to get links, then backing out at the last moment (for just $100!?) is not even crass…it’s despicable. And that’s from someone who specifically requested to have the longest, spammiest looking anchor text among the sponsors: JNB Web Promotion Search Engine Optimization Services.
  3. Do you even know how much an average PR6 link costs nowadays?!
  4. Misery loves company. Hope you and seoluv have a happy marriage.
  5. Don’t go up too high the whitehat mountain. Air’s thin up there. You might faint. One only has to check your site’s link donors with Javascript disabled (how to do this) to see the Javascript redirecting gibberish you pass off as professional SEO.

And before you think somebody will be crying because he/she won’t be getting any prize, your spot has been replaced by Scott Horne aka Web Professor who has generously played the role of hero. He’s offering USD 200.00 for the third prize winner.

Puta you didn’t dupe me freeloader, you duped the entire SEO Philippines group :) for what…. $100?

Huh what the heck? Now we know who is who in the SEO community. Definitely don’t get his services. He doesn’t deserve a link. I can’t stand people like him and that guy who stole Gail’s design. Talagang freeloaders who will not succeed in their business.

aaron wall on September 28th, 2006 at 5:47 AM #

Depending on how pissed off you are at the guy it might make sense to make this page rank for brand related queries for their brand.

Bet all you would have to do is send a link request to the people on the mailing list to link to this page and relevancy would sort itself out.

spammers daw ang mga pinoy bloggers? e ano kaya ang tawag sa gagawin niyang pagbawi sa pagiging sponsor after receiving those links from the participants?

okay spammers na kung spammers…. MANLOLOKO naman kayo!

Andrew on September 28th, 2006 at 4:10 PM #

Maybe Bertrand’s lost all his money and can’t afford the measly $100 he pulled.

Isulong SEOPH entry by a Proud Moro on September 28th, 2006 at 7:46 PM #

wow! very unprofessional. i’m happy for you Bertrand. You just lost your credibility in SEO Industry for a mere $100? shame! shame! shame!

i’ll be removing his link on my entry site and will replace it with Web Professor - an angel from high above. :) i wish i will win that #3 spot. hehe but i’m short at #6 spot. hehe.

webprofessor on September 29th, 2006 at 4:47 AM #

Well thats no fun then….

I’ll extend an offer of $50 to the #4, #5, and #6 positions then. Its not much but I hope it makes it more fun for everyone :-)

Isulong SEOPH entry by a Proud Moro on September 29th, 2006 at 7:36 AM #

wow! thats great webprofessor! adding $50 is just like adding more spice and for sure it will be more fun in the awarding night this coming saturday night. alright!

i personally know that john bertrand. nung nasa bacolod pa lang ako. alam ko rin racket nya. kaya nga nung nakita ko sya nag po-post sa yahoogroups before, feeling ko isang bangungot na bumalik sya ulit sa isipan ko.

and here he goes again. nag kalat na naman.

:(

my apologies if i didnt warn everyone bout him. akala ko nag bago na sya. tsk tsk

Jonathan Casuncad on September 29th, 2006 at 9:49 AM #

Ohh well… That’s so like John Betrand. I’ve seen how much of an asshole he is for many years now. From making inquiries posing as a potential client to threatening me with legal action for mentioning his outdated, spammy SEO tactics and posting, racist, homophobic comments on my blog (and I’m not a homosexual by the way - Not that there’s anything wrong with being one).

Now you’ve done it wise guy. Wa he he he he he.

Let’s all link to this blog entry with the anchor text “jnb web promotion” and let it go up the search engine rankings. Lolz

eric on September 29th, 2006 at 9:51 AM #

addendum..

di ba nasabi nya he’splanning to hire 10 people?

ano yan hire na naman at di nanaman pa swelduhin? hay. naku. better kick him out of Yahoogroups. or better yet, deport him to NL

Marc on September 29th, 2006 at 2:24 PM #

Eric, have there been instances before when he didn’t pay the salaries of employees? If so, why am I not suprised…

james on September 29th, 2006 at 3:12 PM #

Hmm…look like Aaron Wall has a point?

Why not make a link to this blog entry http://www.macalua.com/2006/09/27/freeloader/ and use “jnbwebpromotion” as the anchortext

Alfie on September 29th, 2006 at 3:27 PM #

Ganito na lang, ako na lang magbibigay ng $100 pero palitan niyo ang link to his site ng link sa blog ko, http://www.jcmiras.net/surge/. Seryoso ‘to walang lokohan.

Jonathan Casuncad on September 29th, 2006 at 4:28 PM #

And the nerve of John Bertand to be posting comments on Aaron Wall’s blog about how he wonders why Google doesn’t catch sites that are being optimized using spammy SEO techniques. Saying it as if he’s not one of them when he relies almost exclusively on spammy, redirected, doorway pages.

Well this page is now on #11 for the term “jnb web promotion” on Google. Pretty soon, it’ll be right up there with his own website. Lol :)

Moslemen M. Macarambon Jr. on September 29th, 2006 at 4:38 PM #

professional blog spammer! haha. baka pati guestbook spammer? hehe.

sumisikat ang JNB web promotion ah. hehehe… it now gets all the attention.

Hala ka John!….ever heard of the word social networking and how it does wonders??? Why not start a contest with a pot money as the prize — targeting this person you so hate or this freeloader guy named John.

mister on September 30th, 2006 at 2:20 AM #

what?? $100 and he expect someone explain to him the tricks of doing it. Guys, if you have the “real” knowledge of how SOA works then this whole search ranking contest idea is a joke. I suggest if you know this SOA stuff then you should have your own company (consulting) right now if making bucks on your own!! Wag po tayong magpa-uto sa mga dayuhan!!

harmony in my ears on October 1st, 2006 at 3:36 AM #

“I was hoping to hire about 10 people from this contest.”

That sounds really intriguing.

“I cannot employ BLOG Spammers N Jammers.”

This is worst!!

Dagnabit, that hits like a parasite to my ears. Someone who gets something free and leaving open wounds which sooner turn into scar. You’ve made yourself a scar man!!

Marc labored very faithfully to put the contest right and gets our salute for doing wonders while endeavoring to earn a living at the same time.

I called him once during the contest and found him very very busy, but he took valuable time to handle the call.

He has every right to set the rules and enforce them.

Best wishes with future growth, success, and bringing correctly the international spotlight to Filipino talents with SEO and related businesses.

JNB WEB PROMOTION, BEST PHILIPPINE SEO FIRM

Hello everyone, after visiting the contest, i realized this contest was wrong, no one could even tell what he/she did for the blogs he did seo for. I understand know why JNB Web Promotion backed out. Coz what Malalua telling us, is very unprofessional. I believe, no one would outsource to the Philippines when we can only optimize blogs. Most blogs are just stuped texts about any stupid topic. To me, JNB WEB PTOMOTION, is the best seo firm in the Philippines.

Si John Bertrand??

As SEO Expert his:
Method: Backdoor pages, Using Porns to Increase Web pages ranks. Balita ko One of his client sa cebu city noon nag file ata ng case against him dahil yung ginagawa nila for optimizing the pages is using keyword related to porn..

Bakit kaya??? Well alam ko ang reason bat di ko na sasabihin pa.. dahil below the belt na eh,… Cge!!!

This is the first time that i came to know this John Bertrand. Well, i’d like to tell you that you don’t mess up with good people trying to enjoy their SEO here in the Philippines.

You don’t have the right to call us blog spammers and jammers. if this is the case, how do you call JNB Web Promotion? Baka alak yan.

You have the nerve to say this..HA! e since the start of the contest its been that way and then you quit after getting what you wanted. JNB Web Promotion really deserve to be in the junk yard. PWE….

Bibokz on March 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 AM #

The scar is still fresh how this issue created lots of negative issues and incompetent activity of JNB Web Promotion.
