Danny Sullivan Departs
Posted (Marc) in SEO on August-30-2006

Where would Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies be without Danny Sullivan?

Shame. I’ve always thought there would still be many more SES conferences to join to catch the Big D himself. Now the chance of meeting the man is as slim as Diana Zubiri leaving a comment here.

Hat tip to Graywolf.

Spamming and TrustRank Theories

You know you’ve found gold when you see a paper refer to PageRank as “the principal eigenvector of the stochastic matrix of the Web.”

AdSense Checks via Western Union?
Posted (Marc) in AdSense on August-28-2006

If it’s happening in Malaysia, I don’t see why Google can’t implement it here in the Philippines. I agree with Migs‘ comment; this initiative would be a big help to the $100 - $300 bracket. But to be honest, I’d rather have everything pass through DHL. Nothing beats door-to-door baby.

Hat tip to Abe.

Manila Times Does a Washington Post
Posted (Marc) in Link Building, SEO on August-28-2006

Mega content sites like online newspapers live or die with advertising. The recent trend has been to go the sponsored text link route. But with the recent outing of the Washington Post blogroll scandal, the desire to rent text links for PageRank, theming and traffic purposes (in that particular order) is lessened somewhat as Matt Cutts and Brian White from Google have confirmed that links of these type (once identified) lose their Midas touch.

Now what if the advertiser was someone bigger-than-your-average gambling, finance, etc. sites currently on the WashingtonPost.com Sponsored Blogroll. What if the advertiser in question was someone as big as Yahoo!?

Linkmilking the Media
Posted (Marc) in Link Building, SEO on August-26-2006

Read SEO Scoop’s 5 Tips for Media Link Love. I particularly liked tip #4:

4. Have a dog parade in front of the newspaper office with your logo all over the dogs. Ok, it doesn’t have to be a dog parade, but do SOMETHING strange in front of the office. Reporters love to run outside, clicking away with their cameras, to get a great pic of something unusual that just happened in their town. Make sure you are there ready to give them information about why you are doing such a crazy thing.

I’ve been thinking about flash mob-ing the INQ7 and MB offices just to get their attention for quite some time now. I wonder what it’ll take to get Erwin, Annalyn and all the other writers to link up :)

Managing Filipinos
Posted (Marc) in Corporate Shit on August-24-2006

Read Joel Spolsky’s three-part post on management 101 here, here and here.

I’ve been cursed to have worked with managers, particularly those numbskulls on the outbound train, who think Command and Control is the way. I’ve also worked with people who only move when there’s something in it for them. Along the way, I’ve been blessed to meet individuals who buy and help sell the vision.

Filipinos are a difficult bunch to manage. The 90% of your staff that don’t buy your vision and can’t self-actualize will be more motivated by fear and money. I’d put the recipe at 65% fear and 35% money. If it were up to me, I’d throw all the money on the 10% that do buy your vision/self-actualize and put everyone else on a 100% fear diet. The 10% that matter are your partners, the rest are just cattle.

On Tributes and Adulations
Posted (Marc) in Corporate Shit on August-24-2006

Focus. Put the commercial tributes and self-adulations on draft mode, and focus on why you wanted to be heard in the first place:

You started blogging for a reason. You thought you could change the way people viewed your company, you had insight you thought was worth sharing, you wanted to help people market their sites – there was something that made you decide to blog. Don’t lose sight of that. That reason is important. It’s what makes your blog important.
