Dell + Google = Better SEO?

SEO

On the news that Google was pre-installing Google software on Dell computers, the Fortune Interactive Corporate Blog had this to say:

This may go a long way toward increasing the general public’s awareness of the importance of search engine optimization (SEO). Before long, industry jargon like pagerank, optimize, keyword density, and inbound links, may become part of the common vernacular.

There are many effects from such a change which would directly impact SEO and search engine marketing (SEM). Two such effects are:

  • the average computer user becomes more search savvy
  • more business decision makers see the importance of SEO and SEM

Getting the toolbar or desktop search will not raise the level of SEM knowledge. Regular Dell owners will probably see the Google toolbar as a popup blocker first and a shortcut to the Google.com search screen a close second. My dear Uncle Renato in Oxnard, California will never get around to understanding PageRank, the green pixie dust or the fact that the toolbar will be sending usage information to Google servers upon activation of the advanced feature set. He won’t know search engine optimization even if it hits him in the face. Don’t even get me started on Google Desktop.

Regular users still stand to benefit but the real immediate beneficiary is Google.

Depending on how Google sets the configuation of these software tools, 100 million computers would make a significant sample size for collecting online behavior data to support a clickstream-based algorithm. Google needs to wean itself away from a link popularity-based ranking system. If harnessed correctly, a test bed of 100 million computers recording valuable clickstream data will have a huge impact on how rankings are determined. The system won’t be spam-free, but it would be an upgrade to the current link-based system. Clickstream data plus TrustRank and PageRank will hopefully result in a better search experience. A better search experience will reinforce Google’s #1 position in search.

Good for Google searchers who get better results.
Bad for those people not aware of privacy issues.
Bad for people who want to build scrappy little startup search engines - the barriers to entry are getting huge.
    Bad for link buying/selling SEO.
Good for human-oriented and linkbait SEO.

Google’s search features will be among the first things that a large number of Dell computer users will see when they first fire up their computers. That arguably trumps any of the benefits Microsoft has engineered for itself via its new browser.

After what seems like forever (but is really only 4 days) my v7ndotcom elursrebmem entry finally ranks, coming in somewhere between 25 and 30 depending on what ranking tool and data center you happen to be using (SERP). However now that every SEO on the planet has a blog I thought I might cruise around the blogosphere and see how blogs are being used in the contest. http://www.bigpenispill.net
