Fewer AdSense Ads

SEO

My favorite 336×250 Google AdSense ad unit has been displaying two ads on a consistent basis (used to be a consistent 4). But for the past 2 days, that little-ad-unit-that-could under each post title has almost doubled in eCPM values. I’m not jumping yet, you know how fickle these things are so let’s wait for a month.

Some AdSense publishers over at Webmasterworld have similar experiences, but it’s generally a mixed crowd.

AdSenseAdvisor throws his hat in:

The ads you’re referring to are called expanded text ads.

I assure you that we performed lots of testing before releasing this feature, and found there was a revenue benefit for publishers. If you see expanded text ads appearing on your site, it’s because our technology has determined that showing fewer ads on a particular site represents a greater revenue benefit for you.

As you know, the ad auction is dynamic so while you might see expanded text ads appearing sometimes (i.e., when they represent the greatest revenue potential), at other times your ad unit might contain more ad units.

Whatever you say sir. Unlike the others, I’m not too concerned with the extra whitespace, just take care of my eCPM and CTR like you promised ;)

I’ve noticed the same thing for a short while and I’m still not sure yet if it’s a good thing. Really bad timing because of Christmas and New Year’s skewing data - at least for digital goods anyways which aren’t really on people’s xmas lists and don’t mix well with drinks at parties.

I don’t know, maybe it’s a good thing. I’m not sure what to make of the wording “…it’s because our technology has determined that showing fewer ads on a particular site represents a greater revenue benefit for you.”

What do they mean by ‘particular sites’? That statement tells me that some sites are given more ads than others. How do they decide which sites to do this to? Those are my questions.

And geez…. how ugly is the font used in the ads! I loved the 336×250 ads until they started this.

i also have the same experience in my site. but i also notice my CTR jumped up yesterday and tomorrow. Today I have a XX% CTR. Last month my average CTR is X.X%. I hope this continues.

Chief, not disclosing CTR is one of the cardinal rules of Adsense. Only daily/monthly revenue is allowed!

I notice only two ads on my 336×280 large rectangle few weeks ago and never go back to four. I guess fewer ads means more $.

Indeed. At least from my experience. It’s not conclusive though as there are others who swear a decrease in click values.
