Practical AdSense Tips II
Posted (Marc) in E-Business, SEO on July-23-2005

During the first part of the Practical AdSense Tips series, we discussed 1) how to position AdSense ads on the screen, 2) the best performing ad unit sizes, 3) practical AdSense color tips and 4) which pages go well with adsense.

Now, here are a few more practical tips to make AdSense worth your while. I’ve compiled quite a few pointers from my online travels. Some tips apply for AdSense, some for SEO, still some others for both. Not all tips apply. Use what you can now, then when ready, return for the others.

  • Blog about Expensive Topics - expensive topics command high keyword bids in Adwords; if your posts hit the AdSense sweet spot, it should display the ads with ridiculously high cost-per-click (CPC) amounts in Adwords. Why? The AdSense publisher (that’s you) stands to earn 20% of the ad’s CPC. That’s right, if somebody clicks on one of your hundred-dollar keyword ads, you’ll earn $20 per click. But before you go start making your own made-for-AdSense Mesothelioma site, be warned. Google keeps a close watch on these high CPC keywords. If they smell clickfraud, you’re gone. For a list of the most expensive keywords in AdSense, go here.
  • Stick a catchy image next to your AdSense ads - why? shock value. Before a click can happen, you have to get the visitor’s attention. What better way to do that than to add a couple of attention-grabbing images in the vicinity of your AdSense ads? Someone experienced an increase of 400% in clickthroughrates (CTR).
  • SEO your site - no one’s going to click your ads if they can’t find your blog in the first place right? I’m talking about on-page and off-page factors here. Before you go tweaking your site, read this and this for a list of things to avoid.

I’d like to ad some ideas as well…

i) Make very good use of the Channels as this will provide you with feedback which ad layout and placements earn better for your site. That way, you can act on it and re-format the ads.

ii) Don’t fill up your page with too many outgoing links. What you want is for the readers to read the content and when they are hungry for more links, your AdSense will be the first one they’ll see and click.

iii) Not to many adsense ads in one page. You’ll only most probably get those $0.1 clicks instead of the prettier ones.

I’m new to adsense, any help will be appreciated. :-)

the tip on blogging about expensive topics is nice, but i think it is hard going into something that isn’t your passion.

the topics you will write will appear “believable” and the audience will feel that you have the authority on such topic if it is what you do best on and offline.

Byteburn, I agree completely. If you have the passion (or stomach for it), go blog about products/services with high price points.

“Stick a catchy image next to your AdSense ads”

Sorry I’m no “web nerd” but on googles adsense sight I saw it clearly posted with 3 picture examples for that matter that a publisher CANNOT post an image close to and inline with a google adsense ad. That this would be a way of falsely inducing someone to click on the ad or might create a false correlation between the ad and the image next to it. Just thought I’d bring that up and find out what your thoughts are on this. By the way great site most importantly, really practical and useful information. Cheers and keep up the good work!
