Road Trip: Cabangan, Zambales
Posted (Marc) in Travel, Photography on May-3-2005

Cabangan Zambales
A view of the ocean from inside the beach house.

Note: The complete Cabangan, Zambales photo gallery can be viewed here.

There are still quite a few spots that hold that old-time charm and Cabangan in Zambales is one of them. Cabangan’s rolling topography is dotted with mango farms but the main attraction would have to be its sandy coastline. The 4 towns of San Antonio, San Narciso, San Felipe and Cabangan all face the South China Sea and are certified surfing destinations for both local and international waveriders.

Cabangan Zambales Road Trip Buddies
Sharm, Mic and Nereus were there. Raul, Joseph, Jason and Ann also made the trip (photo courtesy of Raul Gulla)

The trip to Cabangan was hatched shortly after our Puerto Galera 3 adventure. Wil, a good friend in the office, invited us over for a weekend in his aunt’s beach house in Cabangan, Zambales. I hadn’t ventured that far north of Subic so I was naturally excited.

Interesting story. My wife’s extended family is from Botolan (parents lived in Olongapo) and oddly enough I cannot remember ever going to the beach there. For an island nation, the seashore just isn’t that popular.

Marc on May 3rd, 2005 at 6:56 PM #

Miguk, hope you saw enough to make you want to go visit Zambales! If the pictures didn’t do justice to the area, don’t worry. We’re already making plans for a second trip next month. I’ll make sure to get extra special photos of the area :)

Miguk on May 4th, 2005 at 9:44 PM #

Huh? I lived in Zambales for years, just that we never went to the beach. Older pinays are anti-beach (makes them dark daw):-)

I always enjoyed the drive along the coast. Even going to Baguio, I would take that route up to La Union, etc.

Marc on May 13th, 2005 at 7:47 AM #

Miguk, have you heard of Capones Island in San Antonio, Zambales?

Elle on May 13th, 2005 at 10:51 AM #

Heyo, bro! Will be going to Capones Island on the 3rd weekend of May. I have 3 people (2 kids and another adult) coming with me but the group just ballooned to 10. Capones is about 5kms just off Barrio Pundaquit, beside 2 other islands (Camera). Nice white sand, clear waters. We had one of our sailing stops there about 3 years ago.

Marc on May 13th, 2005 at 5:52 PM #

Ey Elle! Was able to see some pics of the island already. Sana haunted yung lighthouse :P lemme know what you’ll find.. Sharm’s group will be going to Pansol kasi.. Pansol vs. Capones Island…arrrrgh :(

Geralucaret on September 18th, 2005 at 9:47 AM #

My mom is from Cabangan Zambales. Our house is actually in the middle of the church, a school, municipal hall and the wet market. Anyway… It’s really interesting to know that someone other than myself finds this town interesting. No matter how small and sometimes boring this place could be, I cannot take the peace of mind I get whenever I visit the place.

The next time you go there visit the river near the quarry, sa likod bahay ng madaming ethnic minorities. Sobrang ganda ng makukuha mong pictures.

Marc on September 19th, 2005 at 2:22 PM #

Geralucaret, it really is a nice place to visit. Last I heard, many non-residents were buying beach lots left and right, so it probably won’t be as silent :) I’m definitely going back. Need to exhale. Soon.

jong on September 24th, 2005 at 7:03 AM #

ey grew up in Iba, Zambales. Stayed there my entire elementary years. Heheh but i’ve never been to those places. Hmm.. Minsan nga makapunta.. Yayain ko family ko sa summer. maganda daw sa capones island sabi ng ate ko. Well, nakatira pala kami as in malapit lang sa beach. Baka kilala nila kami mga “Abad” hehe surname ko hehe sa Iba, Zambales heheh… *grins*

Marc on September 24th, 2005 at 12:01 PM #

Jong, haven’t been to Iba. Ano pwede makita don? :)

jong on September 24th, 2005 at 11:53 PM #

Hmm. more beaches hehe.. Sa mga nakita ko sa pictures mo parang mas magaganda pa yong beach sa may bandang cabangan at san antonio. Sa iba kase medyo ayus lang din. Hindi ko pa rin nalilibot ang Iba hehe…

Jim Conti on November 2nd, 2005 at 3:57 AM #

Hi,

I own a stretch of beach in Cabangan “Pilot Light Beach”. There wasn’t much there when we bought it in 1986…just a small fishing village.

Marc on November 2nd, 2005 at 10:39 AM #

Jim, it’s probably still a small fishing village :) any plans of visiting this year?

Jim Conti on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:49 AM #

Yes, we like to visit every year. We are looking at the March 06 timeframe.

Jim Conti on November 3rd, 2005 at 3:55 AM #

By the way, the small lagoon that seperates Bgy. Arew from Bgy. St Rita is the same one where a portion of the Movie “Apocolypse Now” was filmed. They flew a River Boat River (PBR) in undre a Sachorsky Sky Crane.

luvycire on January 20th, 2006 at 8:22 PM #

hi…. proud to see your pix… that’s our pride….visit me at likod bahay im living there nice to see..

Marc on January 21st, 2006 at 11:54 AM #

Luvycire, we’re planning a visit to Cabangan sometime in April. I’ll try to look you up when I’m there :) are the waves good enough for surfing during that month?

java959 on February 27th, 2006 at 11:54 PM #

Fun pictures and good info on the surfing. Something to remember next time we visit my inlaws just north of the towns you mentioned in Beneg. Mostly shorebreak @ the beach in Beneg, but it was just fun to be in the water. My kids loved the beach as we had it all to ourselves except for the few fishermen that we saw. We definately were dark after having gone to the beach almost every day for two weeks. We were just there earlier this month visiting from Southern California. Can’t wait for our next visit.

Marc on March 1st, 2006 at 5:29 PM #

Java959, I’ll try to get new pics of the place soon. Stay tuned. Got any Cabangan surfing pics?

bart on March 7th, 2006 at 1:33 AM #

Hi! My dad’s family hails from Sta. Cruz Zambales. It’s way way far than Iba. There’s a white sand beach there also its called Putipot. My friends are planning to go on a beach outing this summer. Seeing your pictures, maybe I’ll suggest Cabangan to them. Do you have contact numbers so we could try to inquire with the resorts? Thanks. :)

Question: My friends and I will be visiting Cabangan next week. Pero galing kami ng SUbic. The problem is, since galing kami ng Manila at ang tagal ko ng di nakakapunta ng Cabangan… May road map ka ba ng papunta dun?

Thanks

bea on August 19th, 2006 at 3:25 PM #

hey. me and my friends are looking for a nice beach house to go to for our graduation get together. would it be okay if i contact your friend? (wil cruz who owns a beach house) maybe we could rent it lang? :D thanks.

MarJim on August 20th, 2006 at 10:21 AM #

Guys, im from San Narciso. I’m glad to see you all who really like our native land. Im willing to help anyone who want to visit. I also love zambales. I always make tour every month to explore and expand my knowledge about my home province.

San Antonio beach “pundakit” is still the best of all i think. Far from town but lovely adventure will come.

San Narciso also got a perfect beach. I still remember the series Panday by Eco filmed in San Narciso beach.
He even visit once or twice a year to do surfing.

San Felipe beach, far from town but interesting to go, but only few wants. :)

Cabangan beach is one of the preserved beach by rich people. And so good to see.

Botolan also got a nice and perfect beach. Only few knew it but you’ll love it.

Iba also got many beach and one of them has been used for Mara Clara series in channel 2. I don’t remember the name of that series correctly.

If you need more info ill be glad to tell you.

speaks of zambales, Masinloc town tops ‘em all. beautiful san salvador island (”polo”, they call it). century old spanish church, hanging bridge in barrio sta rita. busy markets (fish abounds) hauled by fishermen right in front of customers. visit the famous rest. called “Kalang” in kahawangan. Masinloc town is a local tourist attraction.

Rex on November 5th, 2006 at 11:45 PM #

A friend of mine, a land surveyor who happens to own a piece of beach lot in Candelaria, says that town is slowly becoming a favorite choice of some foreigners because of its lovely beaches. I just don’t know since I haven’t seen the place yet.

Am from Subic. And as far as I’m concerned, Subic has one of the best beaches in Zambales - white sand, calm waters … fit for swimming all day round.

Am into real estate sales. So, if you guys are looking for a parcel of land here in Subic that you wish to own and spend the best part of your retirement, just contact me. My celphone No. is +639193024855; my email ad: team4us_mktg@yahoo.com.

Right now, we’re selling some beach-front lots within the Sta. Lucia Realty’s Club Morocco. Oh, the place is very nice! From there, you’ll have a breath-taking view of Subic Bay and the distant Zambales ranges. And the location as well will give you what you’re looking for - a total quietness and privacy and yet not very far from the luxuries of fine living.

As the saying goes, “to see is to believe.” So, reserve that plane ticket now and come and visit SUBIC.

I’ll be available to guide you around.

Thanks.

Hi Marc! I plan to go to Capones Island with my boyfriend. Is Capones different from Camera Island? Or is just one big island with different names? What’s the nearest resort where we can stay in so we can just simply take a banca to Capones / Camera Island? and would you know how much a banca ride would cost for 2 pax? thank you so much! ;)

Gaute Storheil on April 22nd, 2007 at 3:26 AM #

Hi, I am from Norway and I love Cabangan Zambales. I have bought a beach property in barangay Laoag, and I love the place. For everyone who wants some peace and quiet, it is an ideal holiday spot.
Me and my wife has been there several times, and is planning to move there for good when the time is right :-)

its good to know that lots of people are enjoying the beach sa cabangan…..i’m from san isidro, cabangan and every time na umuuwi ako doon ay di ko nalilimutang pumunta sa beach…very relaxing sa beach doon kasi malinis ang tubig. sobrang linaw ng tubig as in kitang-kita mo ang buhangin kahit na malalim na. marami na ring improvements sa cabangan right now, like what lorenz mentioned, meron na roong mangocamp in cadmang. one more thing na maganda roon ay yung “matag-ay lanum” falls sa east side ng cabangan (mountain side). i’ve been there twice and it’s very nice. it’s about 2 hour hike by foot at nakakaligaw lalo na pag walang guide…hehhehh!!!pero the best yung place. if someone wants know about cabangan just mail me at razillagas@yahoo.com or razillagas@gmail.com

Lorenz on June 17th, 2007 at 10:02 AM #

thanks razi…

wow… i heard mango camp would like to adopt that mountain as part of their adventure itinerary. Am not sure if its the same mountain we’re talking after that peak.. we went down the hills pa then we were brought to a stream fresh water… nde daw sya napupuntahang ng tao. As to security its safe naman kasi meron pinyahan farm dun ay may mga lokal na nagbabantay.

as i have told you.. mango camp has lots to offer.. dami activities like paintball, atv, and would you believe??? meron WALL CLIMB!!

Hi. Thanks for taking interest in Cabangan. I was raised in Cabangan but now lives here in Quezon City. My family lives at the back of the old Shell station. I have so many relatives there and likes to visit my small sweet town once a year. When I like to unwind and be relieved of the fast life of Manila, I usually go home to Cabangan and have a taste of the peace you will never find anywhere else.

Thanks for featuring Cabangan.

My parents are from San Antonio and Bario Maloma, San Felipe. I belong to the Barretto and Magsaysay clan. I’m married to an American and went to Maloma with our 10 year old daughter 3 years ago and have been going every year since then. My daughter and husband loves Zambales. They get up at 6:30am and was surprised to find out that the water was so warm. The only complaint though was the jellyfish sting. Has anybody experienced it?

Good morning. A friend of mine is inviting to do a funshoot at Cabangan, Zambales.. I’ve been reading the threads and it seems to be a place of wonder and calm. would anyone know how far Cabangan is from Angeles City? Responses appreciated. Thank you

Thanks for the pictures! I am interested in buying some beach property there. I know of one or two that is for sale, but would love more options. I don’t want to make this a commerical website/blog, but really love the beauty of Zambales… I am looking for a beachfront lot that is not in a crowded area nor has a lot of tourists. Want to build a small house. My email is LTDARIN@YAHOO.COM. Thanks for the great pictures.

Re: Query on the posting of Marissa of Barretto-Magsaysay clans of Zambales.

I am a Barretto descendant too. My grandmother is a Barretto whose mother is from Longos, Cabangan, Zambales. We are compiling at the moment a BARRETTO FAMILY TREE which includes alomost 3 thousand descendants. The earliest ancestor we were able to trace was ANTONIO LORENZO BARRETTO who was born circa 1690 in Goa, India.

I would like to include you in our tree too. If you are interested kindly contact me at my email add gd_cruz@yahoo.com.

Jocelyn Fernandez Swain on April 9th, 2008 at 6:21 AM #

Hi! my name is Jocelyn Swain, formerly Jocelyn Fernandez. I’m from San Juan. For the first time, I went home to Cabangan, Zambales after 22 years. I left Cabangan February of 1986. Last December, me, my husband Bob, and my two kids Brian & Michael went home for Christmas. We sure enjoy our stay, but not long enough. We went to the Beach with Pia & Kuya Virgil’s family, Angela Ferrer, Grace Labrador, & Alice Cabling. We stayed there until dark. We missed Manet de Jesus & Fe Fernandez. Lot’s and lots of food. Believe it or not, we went to “Two Weddings and a Funeral.” We want to go back home soon. Another thing, it’s so shocking the way Filipino’s drive. I’m so scared. But overall, I still love everything about Cabangan.

Raul S Cainghug on April 17th, 2008 at 7:34 AM #

Cabangan is a nice place. My sister in-law, Amparo Rivera has a sari sari store which is close to Santa Rosa Church

My mother Cristeta Rivera is the first cousin of Ms. Clarita Rivera-Cainghug. Their fathers Federico “Lolo Icong” and Fidel “Lolo Fiding” were brothers. I frequently visit Amparo “Auntie Paring” when I go home to Cabangan. Hope to see you next year.
