Retro Transformer Dreams

I’m seriously thinking about getting Seasons 1 to 4 of the now classic Transformers Generation 1 series. Back in the 80’s, this was THE show to watch. If you’re an 80’s kid you know what I mean. There were a lot of other shows to watch, but nothing compared to the “robots in disguise”. And you thought people would outgrow energon cube-based subplots. I went over to Bidshot.com to check out if any of the local pirates had some Transformers DVD loot. Can’t imagine I missed so many episodes:

  • 98 episodes for Transformers: Generation 1 (Seasons 1 to 4)
  • 52 episodes for Beast Wars (Seasons 1 to 3)
  • 52 episodes for Transformers: Armada
  • 27 episodes for Transformers: Energon
  • 1 Transformers: The Movie

Optimus PrimeAnd I thought I knew the Transformer universe. I Googled the subject for a few more hours to update myself. I think I’m hooked again.

Favorite Transformer
All diehard Transformer fans had a favorite character. Mine would be Wheeljack of Generation 1. Wheeljack’s profile as taken from TheTransformers.net reads: ”

That guy can build a neutron bomb out of a wristwatch and a rusty can,” says Bluestreak, and that’s not far from the truth. As well as the Ark fashioned the Autobots, Wheeljack is always coming up with ways to improve them, particularly their weaponry. His knack for creating wild new gadgets has earned him a “mad scientist” reputation and their deadly effectiveness has earned him the respect of friends and enemies alike. He is also the Autobot most adept at driving while in his automobile mode and has pulled off tricks that Hollywood stunt drivers haven’t even dreamed of yet. He fully enjoys showing off when the opportunity presents itself.

BTW, Wheeljack’s officially dead. KIA-ed in the Battle of Autobot City :)

Would you believe they’re planning a Transformers movie too?

ei, did you know there was a series of books like the choose-your-own-adventure series but about transformers? reading the books were addictive! really felt nice having been one of the characters and envisioning oneself being the with the autobots and helping Spark and his dad (or was spark the dad?!!?) give them autobots a hand against the scheming decepticons. more than meets the eye! ;-)

the series first aired in the late 70’s and around the mid-80’s with reruns. i was around 6 or 7 years old back then and remember really well how excited i was with the series and how i couldn’t wait to see the next episode (i do remember seeing most of them on tape, though). you’ve probably heard of voltron. arguably, it was voltes v that started the trend towards giant mecha animation and popularized it. ;)
